White Orchard Walkthrough

White Orchard is still the opening region of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered when the game launches September 29, 2026. Geralt and Vesemir ride in after the Kaer Morhen prologue, the griffin is already eating the local livestock, and Nilfgaard holds the garrison south of the inn. This walkthrough covers that region only: Devil by the Well, the griffin contract, the garrison, Places of Power, and the Viper sword diagrams. It does not spoil Velen, Novigrad, Skellige, or any later-act ending. For difficulty, saves, and when to leave, use Getting Started. For the griffin as a mechanical exam, use the Combat Guide.

Story-wise you are looking for Yennefer as a lead toward Ciri. That is all this page will say about the search. Character primers live on Characters, Geralt, and Ciri.

Arrival: inn, board, and garrison briefing

Ride with Vesemir to White Orchard’s inn (Woesong). Eat, talk through the local rumors, and open the notice board outside. Take every contract and missing-person note; you can fail to finish some of them, but you cannot take a board you never opened. Then ride south to the Nilfgaardian garrison. The officer there is the griffin contract’s real employer. If you skip him and only read the board, investigation markers stay thinner than they should.

On the way, dismount for Places of Power and for drowners on the river. Apply Drowner oil, Quen, and short dodges. This is the warm-up, not a side activity. Set Quick Sign Casting first on Controls so Yrden is a button when the well starts going wrong.

Devil by the Well (noonwraith)

The abandoned village west of the inn has a well, a noonwraith, and the first contract that teaches you the game is not “hit the ghost with steel.”

  1. Read the board notice and talk to the quest giver in the village / inn circuit so the contract is active.
  2. Investigate the well and the nearby huts with Witcher Senses. You want the diary trail and the personal effects that explain who died.
  3. Find the grave and recover the bone or necklace the ritual needs. The noonwraith will not stay down until you deal with the tether the bestiary describes.
  4. Draw a Yrden circle at the well. When the wraith is inside it, she becomes hittable. Silver sword, Specter oil if you have it, Quen up.
  5. Dodge the grab and the scream. Do not roll five times and run out of stamina. Recast Yrden when she teleports and the circle is empty.
  6. After the fight, loot, return to the quest giver, and take the coin. You have now used the Sign the griffin will not teach you.

If you have never mixed potions, drink Swallow when the yellow health starts dropping, not at the loading screen. Toxicity is the limiter; details are on Signs and Alchemy.

Places of Power while the map is small

Walk or ride to every Place of Power in the region before you treat the griffin as a finale. White Orchard’s stones sit:

  • North of the mill, across the stream.
  • In the marsh west of the abandoned village (the Devil by the Well neighborhood).
  • In the woods south of the inn.
  • Near the Nilfgaardian garrison.
  • Along the eastern road toward the river crossing and the battlefield graves.

Draw once from each. The ability point is the prize; the Sign bonus is extra. Spend those points before the griffin if you already know you live on Quen or Igni. The remaster skill tree revamp does not make unused stones retroactively generous — it just gives you a better place to spend the points. See the Skill Tree when you are ready to plan past White Orchard.

Some stones have a guardian wraith or wolf pack. That is still White Orchard, not a later-act boss. Oil, Quen, Yrden or Igni, done.

Nilfgaardian garrison: griffin intel and Viper steel

The garrison is a military camp, not a dungeon. Talk to the commander about the griffin so the hunting ground, the missing hunter, and the buckthorn step actually exist in your journal. While you are inside the palisade, loot with manners: soldiers notice theft. The Viper steel sword diagram is in a chest in the garrison’s interior rooms (the commander’s building — upstairs or in the locked chest circuit, depending on how you enter). Take it. You will not craft Grandmaster gear here; you will have an early Witcher-school steel recipe instead of a random Nilfgaardian longsword.

If a chest is locked, use your Witcher Senses for keys or come back after related conversations. Do not break the contract flow by murdering the camp. You still need these people to pay you.

The griffin contract (Beast of White Orchard)

This is the region’s exam.

  1. Investigate the hunting ground with Witcher Senses: corpses, tracks, the hunter’s remains.
  2. Harvest buckthorn from the river plants the journal flags. Underwater herbs are why you have a breath meter. Do not fight the griffin, remember the herb, and then dive during the fight.
  3. Lure with the bait at the site the contract indicates. Oil the silver sword with Griffin oil. Quen. Swallow. Thunderbolt if your toxicity can take it. Tawny Owl if you roll too much.
  4. On the ground, the griffin is a large animal: sidestep the swipe, roll the takeoff/dive, punish when it lands. The remaster’s targeting and extra engagement steps should make grounded hits connect more honestly than 2015 whiff-fests. They also make greedier combos easier to overcommit. Short light strings, then dodge.
  5. Watch the sky. A dive is a roll, not a block. Recast Quen after a hit.
  6. When it dies, cut the trophy, then climb to the nest on the hill for extra loot. Return to the Nilfgaardian officer for pay and the story flag that points you at Vizima.

If the fight is ugly, you skipped oil, Yrden practice, or Places of Power. The Combat Guide is the retry, not a lower difficulty — though lowering difficulty is allowed if you only want the cutscenes.

Viper silver and other White Orchard errands

The Viper silver sword diagram sits in a river wreck / underwater chest north of the mill. Dive, loot, surface, dry off, and put the diagram next to the steel one. Craft when you have the components; the inn merchant and the herbalist sell some of what you lack. Do not sell monster parts “for space” and then cry at the craftsman.

Other worth-doing stops, still without later-act spoilers:

  • The herbalist’s hut for Swallow ingredients and recipe purchases.
  • The mill area for drowners and a Place of Power.
  • Battlefield graves and deserter camps if your level matches. If the skull icon is several levels above you, leave it.
  • Gwent, if the innkeeper will deal. Losing your first Northern Realms deck is a lesson, not a wipe.

You do not need every treasure marker. You do need the diagrams, the stones, the well, and the griffin.

Leaving for Vizima (and coming back)

When the garrison story step sends you toward the royal audience, White Orchard’s main plot is done. You can still fast travel back after that sequence to finish a chest or a Place of Power you skipped. You cannot undo a griffin fight you failed to oil for. Pack, save in a named slot, and go.

The remaster’s new quest tracking and UI improvements should make the journal less of a maze; they will not mark Viper chests unless you are close. Use Witcher Senses. Use this page. When you are ready for loadouts that outlive White Orchard, open the Builds Hub. When you want to know what the September 29 package changed around this region’s feel — traversal, Roach, Signs FX — read What’s New. The mill will still be there. The noonwraith will not, once you have done the well properly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about the Remastered upgrade, builds, and story.

How do I beat Devil by the Well?

Investigate the well and grave, deal with the wraith’s tether, then fight her inside a Yrden circle on silver with Specter oil and Quen. Details are in the section above; Sign theory is on Signs and Alchemy.

Where are the Viper sword diagrams in White Orchard?

Viper steel is in a chest inside the Nilfgaardian garrison’s commander building. Viper silver is in an underwater wreck north of the mill. Craft them when you have the parts; do not sell monster components to make weight.

Do I need every question mark before the griffin?

No. You need Places of Power, the well contract, garrison intel, oils, and the diagrams if you want early Witcher gear. Random bandit camps can wait. See Getting Started for the leave-region checklist.

When does the griffin fight happen?

After you brief the Nilfgaardian garrison, investigate the hunting ground, and gather buckthorn. Oil silver, Quen, and treat dives as rolls. The Combat Guide is the mechanical companion.

Can I return to White Orchard later?

Yes. After the Vizima story step you can fast travel back for skipped stones and chests. This page still wants you to grab the cheap ability points before you go. Later-act endings are not covered here on purpose.
